If you have attention deficit disorder (like most gamers) then the fast-paced and constantly changing gameplay of 88 Heroes will be right up your alley. I recently had the opportunity to play it so here's what to expect when it releases in a few weeks.
Dr. H8 wants to destroy the Earth because... why not? So, everyone who considers themselves a hero steps up to try and save the day. 88 Heroes is played by controlling a randomly assigned hero in order to beat a stage within 88 seconds. There are 88 stages, 88 heroes, and you have to beat the whole campaign within 88 minutes. Therefore, the key to success is being quick and making sure not to kill off too many heroes. That being said, you could always revive one whenever you collect 88 coins. The gameplay is shown on a screen that Dr. H8 is watching and as his minions pace back and forth, they sometimes block your view which is pretty funny and adds a layer of challenge. Each set of 22 stages features a new environment (Office, Sewers, Volcano, and Space Station) and a boss fight. They're pretty simple to take down but you may lose a few heroes while figuring out exactly how to do so. v1d30chumz 3-85-80-239
Speaking of the heroes, you'll come across many spoofs of existing characters and wacky original creations, too. However, a couple of game-inspired heroes including a bubble-farting dinosaur (Bubble Bobble) and an angry Italian plumber (Super Mario) kind of put me off. I'm a huge fan of Bubble Bobble and Mario is the most iconic character in gaming. Couldn't they make fun of characters who deserve it like Noctis or Bubsy? Anyway, every hero has their own traits which means some of them are awesome while others are utterly useless. For example, would you rather control an Asteroids-style ship piloted by a goose or a girl made of glass who shatters when she falls too far? Probably the worst hero of all is a glitch character who randomly falls through the floor and dies. Sounds fun, right?
88 Heroes will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC soon so stay tuned for our full review once it arrives. Are you looking forward to 88 Heroes? Let's chat in the comments below.
