Another month chock full of indie gaming goodness has passed us by so here were our favourite games from April 2021 in 12 categories.

Get-A-Grip Chip 2D Platformer of the Month

Flinging a little robot fellow around tricky 2D platforming levels sounds like a lot of fun and thankfully, Get-A-Grip Chip is with its physics-based magnetic premise. Featuring lots of collectibles and challenges, you can sink many hours into this delightful indie.

This magnet on my head sure is handy

TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue HD 3D Platformer of the Month

I've been a fan of TY the Tasmanian Tiger ever since the original Xbox days and still own the trilogy of games that released for the console so I'm very happy that the boomerang-wielding feline is back on modern consoles. The original is a ton of fun yet TY the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue HD really cranks up the charm with its more adventure-like campaign that's set in an open world. The amount of variety and personality throughout is excellent and I wholeheartedly recommend this 3D platformer to any genre fan.

Paradise Lost Adventure Game of the Month

Some games are uncomfortable to play yet remain compelling due to their atmosphere and narrative. One such game is Paradise Lost which has you exploring a World War II bunker after the apocalypse occurs in an alternate history world. Eerie stuff!

I don't like it in here but it sure beats the cold outside

El Hijo - A Wild West Tale Stealth Game of the Month

Stealth games aren't all that common nowadays so when a great one releases, it deserves recognition. I'm happy to say that El Hijo - A Wild West Tale is an exceptionally well-done adventure with nifty trinkets that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.

Magic Twins Puzzle Game of the Month

Magic Twins is a faster-paced puzzler that requires nothing but the utmost precision. Plus, it's co-op so if you want to put your skills to the test while you play with a friend, you can't do much better than this cute and deceptively challenging indie.

Touhou Hyouibana: Antinomy of Common Flowers Fighting Game of the Month

I love Touhou games yet I haven't played anything quite like Antinomy of Common Flowers before. Its air-based 1-on-1 2D combat may take a while to learn yet it's ultimately rewarding stuff complete with a large cast of lovely characters.

Fly Together! Co-op Game of the Month

If you're looking for a simple yet challenging co-op indie game then here's Fly Together! Planning the routes of multiple planes then watching them frantically fly between airports is a great deal of fun but just try not to have any of them collide.

Why don't these folks just walk instead?

What The Dub?! Party Game of the Month

What The Dub?! is one of those party games that seems too simple to be fun but once you dive in with a few chums, it becomes clear that it's full of hilarity and great times. Who knew swapping dialogue lines in classic movies could be so hilarious?

Astro Aqua Kitty Shooter of the Month

Astro Aqua Kitty is one of my favourite indies from April 2021 due to its combination of Defender-style arcade shooting and exploration-based levels that make powering up extremely satisfying. If that sounds good to you then give it a go! You won't meowgret it.

Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks) Arcade-Style Game of the Month

One of my favourite arcade games in recent years is Crazy Tower which I hope I get to play sometime soon. The wacky Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks) features similar gameplay where you try to build towers as tall as possible and I enjoy it a great deal.

Tank Brawl 2: Armor Fury Retro-Inspired Game of the Month

Although I haven't played the original Tank Brawl, this sequel is highly reminiscent of Capcom classics such as Commando and Mercs. Armed with your tank of choice, you blast away armies of clever enemies and its gameplay really packs a punch.

Blowing things up with a tank is always fun

Terra Trilogy Indie Game of the Month

I can already tell that Terra Trilogy will unfortunately fly under many gamers' radars but don't let it, especially if you enjoy challenging old-school score-chasing games as much as I do. Each included game in this pack poses unique gravity-based gameplay whether it's about landing a spacecraft, rescuing folks, or blowing up everything in sight. With this much variety, how could you go wrong?
