Indie Game of the Month Awards April 2022
Indie Flowers in Full Bloom

Written by A.J. Maciejewski for Indie GOTM Awards on 🏅
It's hard to believe just how many incredible indie games release every month so here are the best from April in 13 distinct categories.
Kombinera 2D Platformer of the Month
Kombinera is one clever 2D platformer where you carefully control multiple coloured circles while trying not to get snagged on hazards with the goal being to combine every circle. Having to constantly think on your feet makes for one challenging and engaging formula. v1d30chumz 34-231-247-88

Demon Turf: Neon Splash 3D Platformer of the Month
Having thoroughly enjoyed Demon Turf last year, I was delighted to go on another adventure with Beebz. Demon Turf: Neon Splash is a bite-sized spin-off that focuses on 3D platforming and it's an absolute blast; just like the original game. Plus, its new neon aesthetic where you leave a trail of paint wherever you run looks spectacular. It's a tough game to master yet it's hard to put down so if you enjoy playing this spin-off game, make sure to pick up the main game, too, as it's sure to provide hours of 3D platforming entertainment.

Moss: Book II Action-Adventure Game of the Month
Quill is back in Moss: Book II and it's a worthwhile sequel that lives up to the original and then some. Traversing intricate environments in VR as you watch the cute animations and discover treasures in every nook and cranny adds up to one unforgettable adventure.

tERRORbane Adventure Game of the Month
I didn't know what tERRORbane was but upon request from one of our visitors, I decided to try it and I'm glad that I did. Its meta narrative is as clever as it is hilarious and trying to discover glitches as you think outside the box makes it an incredibly satisfying journey.

Toodee and Topdee Puzzle Game of the Month
Toodee and Topdee is a perspective-shifting puzzler where you try to reach each level's goal as both characters; one who controls like a 2D platformer and the other from a top-down perspective. It also features oodles of varied scenarios so definitely check it out. 😄

LIT: Bend the Light Casual Game of the Month
Speaking of puzzle games, the laidback LIT: Bend the Light will have you reflect and refract light from a rotatable bulb to a goal using a series of mirrors and other mechanics. Can you figure out all of the possibilities to solve each stage? It's tricky and rewarding stuff.

Road 96 Narrative Game of the Month
Road 96 tells the story of a collection of characters who are trying to escape an oppressive regime. The twist is that the story is decision-based and procedurally generated so each playthrough will be different to the previous one and it actually manages to remain compelling.

Potato Flowers in Full Bloom RPG of the Month
When it comes to RPGs, dungeon crawlers are my favourite sub-genre and Potato Flowers in Full Bloom is a fantastic one. Not only is exploring the dungeons satisfying, there's also an ingenious battle system where you can see what your opponents will attempt next.

Relayer Strategy Game of the Month
Turn-based SRPGs aren't common in the indie scene and Relayer stands out with its over-the-top characters and simplistic battle system where decking out your party of mechs in upgraded gear is a treat. It's rather cinematic, too, with plenty of action-packed moves.

Slipstream Racing Game of the Month
I love Sega's Out Run and although there are plenty of modern adaptations of the arcade classic, Slipstream does an excellent job of forging its own identity. Slipstreaming is the name of the game so doing that while skillfully drifting around tight corners is great fun.

Ganryu 2 Retro-Inspired Game of the Month
Ganryu 2 is a long-awaited sequel to a Neo Geo arcade game and it's full of action-packed ninja fun that'll give your thumbs a workout. I love the lightning-fast pace of its gameplay but keep in mind that its high degree of difficulty definitely isn't for everyone.

Lucky's Tale VR VR Game of the Month
Although I love Moss: Book II, Lucky's Tale VR really captured my imagination with its simple yet adorable 3D platforming fun. Its lovely world really pops in VR and Lucky is such a cute fox that it makes running around collecting coins an absolute delight.

Princess Farmer Indie Game of the Month
Finally, the very best indie game of April 2022 is without a doubt Princess Farmer. It's one of those indies that'll come to mind whenever I think of underrated games. From its phenomenal amount of variety to its intuitive yet brilliant core puzzle gameplay and its colourful cheerful visuals to its downright hilarious dialogue, what's not to love? Definitely give it a go if you love puzzlers as much as I do. 🐰
