2022 started with a bang thanks to a month full of excellent indie games and with that in mind, here are the best in 12 categories.

Jack 'n' Hat Platformer of the Month

2D platformers are always a delight and Jack 'n' Hat is a special one with charming graphics and challenging gameplay that'll reward you with enjoyable abilities as you progress through its impressively tough campaign. Plus, there are loads of goodies to collect along the way. v1d30chumz 18-232-59-38

Chorus Shooter of the Month

I'm a big fan of 3D space combat games and Chorus really hit the nail on the head with its intuitive shooting mechanics while also featuring a striking story-based campaign that has you following the struggles of ex-cultist Nara. The voice acting is spot-on which makes it as much of a cinematic experience as it is a satisfying shooter. From completing flying challenges to taking on hordes of tough enemies and working on side-quests to unlocking oodles of upgrades; this is one must-have space shooting experience.

COGEN: Sword of Rewind Action Game of the Month

Before playing COGEN: Sword of Rewind, I expected it to be an enjoyable 2D action game but I wasn't expecting it to kick my ass as much as it did. So, if the idea of a tough-as-nails time-manipulating action game appeals to you then you have to play this indie gem.

Heaven Dust 2 Action-Adventure Game of the Month

I had a great time with the retro-inspired survival horror game Heaven Dust yet this sequel fleshes out the experience to a whole new level of polish. The tricky yet doable puzzles blend perfectly with zombie-blasting combat to make for one top-notch survival formula.

DYSMANTLE Sandbox Game of the Month

Speaking of zombies, DYSMANTLE has you play as a fellow in a post-apocalyptic world that you can explore at your own pace as you destroy nearly everything in sight in order to acquire materials that you can use to craft a whole arsenal of useful gear and tools.

Sword of Elpisia RPG of the Month

As far as indie RPGs go, Sword of Elpisia is a unique offering that features adorable pets in its combat system and a story where humans can be transformed into powerful weapons. It's old-school role-playing that's hard to put down and it's rather charming to boot.

Reverie Knights Tactics Strategy Game of the Month

Although many indie devs attempt the SRPG genre, I've never played anything quite like Reverie Knights Tactics with its survival-based campaign and high degree of difficulty where you have to take advantage of your surroundings to emerge victorious. Great stuff! 😊

Nova-111 Dungeon Crawler of the Month

It may have debuted a while ago but Nova-111 has finally made its way to Switch and it's a ton of fun. Following the classic Mystery Dungeon formula, this puzzle-focused dungeon crawler makes rescuing animals and scientists a supremely rewarding adventure.

Vagante Roguelike of the Month

I love roguelikes that start out simply yet gradually grow into something amazing and this describes Vagante perfectly as it's easy to get into, tough to master, and you'll unlock loads of character classes and traits as you progress further and further.

Eschatos Shoot 'em Up of the Month

Finally, Eschatos is available for consoles in the west and this classic shoot 'em up is intuitive for anyone to enjoy whether you're a genre newbie or a seasoned veteran. Simply progressing isn't all that challenging but getting high scores is where the fun truly shines.

Guntech 2 Retro-Inspired Game of the Month

My favourite award to give out each month is for the best retro-inspired game and without a doubt; Guntech 2 deserves it this month thanks to its superb old-school shooting action with tricky gravity and wide assortment of clever objectives and bosses.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 Indie Game of the Month

Last but certainly not least, the overall indie game of the month is Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2. This old-school 2D action game with modern sensibilities will blow your mind with its fast-paced gameplay, gorgeous visuals and awesome music, and tough-to-master stages where outranking your previous efforts is an absolute treat. Will there be a Luminous Avenger iX 3? I sure hope so! 😄
