Another awesome month for indie games is behind us so here are our favourite indies from May 2020 in 12 distinct categories. Enjoy!

Potata: Fairy Flower 2D Platformer of the Month

With so many 2D platformers out there, it takes a lot to stand out. Thankfully, Potata: Fairy Flower does with its clever use of inventory-based puzzles and beautiful levels that are fun to explore. It flew under many gamers' radars but I highly recommend this hidden gem.

I've heard of blue cheese but blue Gs?!

Star Crossed Co-op Game of the Month

There are more couch co-op games than ever and very few of them are as intense and challenging as Star Crossed. Controlling 2 magical girl characters with a friend as you bounce a star back and forth in order to take out hordes of tricky enemies is a great deal of fun and when you factor in the story which features a handful of charming and unique heroes, you're looking at a fully fleshed out cooperative experience that'll keep you and a chum hooked. Oh, and did I mention is has great music and cool special moves? Awesome stuff!

Star Crossed is truly one of the most unique games that I've ever played

Miden Tower RPG of the Month

I love old-school JRPGs and Miden Tower manages to recreate the magic of classic 16-bit RPGs while offering fresh combat that rewards careful planning. Meanwhile, making your party more powerful offers oodles of fun and the cast of characters is fantastic, too.

I think Valen, Betty, Avery, and Gruff are going to have to train harder to beat these guys!

Piczle Cross Adventure Puzzle Game of the Month

Picross has been the primary nonogram puzzle series since its debut but Piczle Cross Adventure is so much fun that I think it has surpassed Picross in many ways. For starters, it's absolutely hilarious and the imaginative campaign setup will surely keep you hooked.

Picross is more fun when there's a goofy story attached

Dread Nautical Roguelike of the Month

Roguelikes combine well with many different kinds of game genres yet Dread Nautical does something novel by blending in turn-based SRPG combat and survival elements. Needless to say, it's a lot of fun. Do you have what it takes to survive the cruise from hell?

I knew I shouldn't have booked my cruise during monster season...

Fury Unleashed Twin-stick Shooter of the Month

Taking out hordes of monsters with a variety of weaponry is a blast and Fury Unleashed brings the goods with its comic book style campaign, local co-op component, and rewarding upgrade system. Plus, the variety of situations that you'll find yourself in is awesome.

Does shooting the undead make them more dead?

Shmup Collection Shoot 'em Up of the Month

It feels odd giving this award to a compilation of 3 shoot 'em ups yet Shmup Collection definitely deserves it as it includes the super-fun Satazius Next, the action-packed Armed 7 DX, and the Raiden-inspired Wolflame. Every shmup fan needs to add this to their library.

Yes, indeed; Satazius Next is a very cool indie shmup

Super Toy Cars 2 Racing Game of the Month

I played and reviewed quite a few racing games in May yet the one that stands out as the best is Super Toy Cars 2. From its clever tracks to its satisfying upgrade system within its varied campaign; you're bound to love racing in these toy cars for hours and hours.

I need to give this little toy more horse power!

Super Mega Baseball 3 Sports Game of the Month

I've loved the Super Mega Baseball games ever since the original debuted and Super Mega Baseball 3 literally and figuratively knocks it out of the park with its tight and comprehensive gameplay as well as its spot-on arcade visuals that are filled with cool ball players.

Super Mega Baseball 3 is probably my favourite baseball game of all time

Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl Retro-Inspired Game of the Month

Many retro-inspired indie games try hard to emulate the classics yet Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl manages to feel like an authentic NES game with its pixel-perfect graphics, awesome music, and enjoyable co-op beat 'em up gameplay. Plus, it has Jay and Silent Bob!

Jay and Silent Bob take out the trash with smoother moves than Morris Day

Pixel Ripped 1995 VR Game of the Month

Although there weren't that many VR games to choose from this month, Pixel Ripped 1995 is an amazing game that would have won this award even in a highly competitive month. Its imaginative campaign and retro aesthetic will make every old-school gamer hooked.

Levelhead Indie Game of the Month

Finally, it's time for the overall best indie game and this month, it's the wonderful Levelhead which is a 2D platformer level creator but there's so much more to it than that. From its intuitive learning tools to its nifty community aspect, it's a must-have game!
