Being an indie gaming fan is constantly rewarding with so many great games regularly releasing so here are 2019's best indies.

Blaster Master Zero 2 Metroidvania of the Year

As a fan of Blaster Master and Inti Creates, Blaster Master Zero knocked my socks off and this sequel turned things up to 11 with its super-challenging campaign, distinct gameplay twists, gorgeous retro visuals, awesome soundtrack, and plenty of secrets to find. I still can't believe how incredible Blaster Master Zero 2 is and I definitely can't wait for a third game!

God's Trigger Co-op Game of the Year

Here's one that flew under many gamers' radars. God's Trigger is a cooperative overhead action game that plays a bit like Hotline Miami yet it features loads of variety, tons of clever puzzles, and 2 characters with enjoyable arsenals of abilities. I highly recommend playing through God's Trigger with a friend as it's one of the most satisfying co-op games ever made.

Killer Queen Black Party Game of the Year

Gathering friends together to play games makes for a fun time and indies like Killer Queen Black can really elevate these shindigs to a whole new level. Strategically working together with your team to claim victory over the opposing team by accomplishing 1 of 3 unique tasks is such a fun formula. For the record, I find the best way to play is online with local friends on your team.

Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!! Rhythm Game of the Year

I've played plenty of rhythm games in my life yet very few have offered as much enjoyment as Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!! Its simple gameplay blends with its steep challenge in such an exciting way while the flashy visuals and awesome music make each attempt feel energetic and full of wonder. Even if you don't usually enjoy these kinds of games, you may still love this.

River City Girls Beat 'em Up of the Year

I've been playing and reviewing Kunio-kun games for years and admittedly, I was skeptical of a western developer taking on the franchise but if anyone could do it, WayForward can! The end result was River City Girls; a hilarious and action-packed beat 'em up that's an absolute blast to play cooperatively with a friend. From its goofy bosses to its quirky side-quests, it's a must-have indie.

Valfaris 2D Action Game of the Year

Having loved my time with Slain: Back from Hell, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Valfaris and it did not disappoint. In fact, it went above and beyond my expectations and it remains one of my favourite 2D action games ever made. Its heavy metal aesthetics blend perfectly with the brutally challenging gameplay and varied campaign to create one awesome indie.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince 2D Platformer of the Year

I enjoyed the previous Trine games immensely and I'm very happy that Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince continued the tradition of the first 2 games by offering a stunning and colourful world filled with ingenious puzzle platforming scenarios. Playing with friends makes the stage layouts change, too, so you can play it through again and again... and again and again!

Effie 3D Platformer of the Year

Here's yet another criminally underrated indie gem. Effie is an immersive and striking 3D platformer that has you beat on enemies and work through tricky scenarios with the help of some very cool abilities. I absolutely fell in love with its world via its delightful graphics and voice acting and I'm sure you will, too. It easily deserves to be 3D Platformer of the Year.

Cadence of Hyrule Crossover of the Year

I never thought I'd see a Zelda game win an indie award but it's 2019 and Nintendo is working hand-in-hand with indie developers to create unique experiences. Cadence of Hyrule is basically Crypt of the NecroDancer set in the Zelda universe and it's a formula that simply works perfectly. Timing every move as you uncover the world map and gather an arsenal of goodies is a real treat.

Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! Genre-blender of the Year

After having a blast with Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?!, I was elated to see a follow-up release for consoles this year. Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! combines various genres such as managing your crew, a roguelike progression system with silly decisions to make, and turn-based RPG battles with giant space ships. Although this sounds like a hodgepodge, it all comes together exceptionally well.

Evoland Legendary Edition Indie Game of the Year

Finally, the big one; our overall indie game of the year! Even though all of the games here are top-notch, Evoland Legendary Edition manages to stand out as the best. It's basically a compilation of 2 games and each one is a retro-inspired treat filled with variety and humour that'll thrill old-school gamers from start to finish. Congrats, Evoland Legendary Edition!
