As someone who loves classic baseball video games, I can't get enough of Retro Mode in the freshly released MLB The Show 19.
One of my fondest 8-bit memories is playing Bases Loaded on NES. From being 5 or so years old and laughing at the "Yuk Dum Boo Bum" that's prominently displayed on the scoreboard to actually playing a few games with my brother and sister, I had a great time with that virtual representation of the old ball game. I've always enjoyed baseball video games so when MLB The Show 19 recently released, I felt compelled to check it out. The main modes are exceptionally well-crafted while featuring oodles of options so you can enjoy the gameplay as casually or as hardcore as you wish. However, I soon found Retro Mode tucked away in the Mini Modes menu option. I thought "Hmm... what's this?" then after booting it up, my jaw dropped at how fun it is as the memories came flooding back.
Even though the graphics still feature the same 3D player models and such from the main modes, the onscreen information is simplified and is even presented in a retro font and the gameplay is very different, too. For starters, the controls are much simpler although you can still throw a wide range of pitches and bat using a few basic tactics. I should mention that moving your pitcher or batter simply makes them shift around with no animation which looks hilarious with the realistic visuals. One aspect that's just awesome is the audio. Aside from the fun generic rock music, you'll hear the ball whistle through the air as if it's an old arcade game and the umpire voiceover is filtered to sound like it's coming from a SNES-era game. The sense of nostalgia that I get from playing Retro Mode is fantastic and the developers clearly put a lot of love and care into creating a fun-filled baseball formula from a simpler time.
As if MLB The Show 19 wasn't awesome enough of a game already, SIE San Diego Studio really knocked it out of the park with this year's Retro Mode. Have you played MLB The Show 19? What are your thoughts about this retro throwback? Let's chat below!
