Recently, I sat down with president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss the name of their groundbreaking new console. During our chat, we examined the naming of Wii U and Reggie revealed the title for their upcoming hardware.
[A.J.] Good evening, Mr. Fils-Aime.
[Reggie] Please, call me Reggie.
[A.J.] Will do. Reggie, the Wii U initially caused confusion for many fans and video game enthusiasts because the name makes it sound like an add-on for the Wii. Even today, I still come across people who think that it is. Are there any regrets at Nintendo for naming the console "Wii U"? Also, what was the process of coming up with the name?
[Reggie] First of all, I would be lying if I said that there aren't any regrets. It's obvious in hindsight that simply appending a letter to an existing product name would lead people to believe that it's merely an extension of that product. However, we wanted to make the most of the Wii brand because it's not only easily recognizable, it's also one of the best-selling consoles of all time. The "U" part of the title simply implies that it's built for "you"; the gamer. We all enjoyed the Wii and now you can enjoy the Wii U. (laughs)
[A.J.] (laughs) All kidding aside, do you think that the sales of Wii U suffered from its name?
[Reggie] It's hard to know for sure, but I would say that, in the end, it did not. Our fans are loyal and our brand is strong so even if there was some confusion at first, I'd like to think that we eventually reached everyone that we wanted to.
[A.J.] I understand that you finally have an official title for your upcoming console which was previously known as the NX. Are you willing to share it with us?
[Reggie] Yes, I would love to. Considering the success of the Wii U, we have decided to name our newest console the "Wii UU" (pronounced "Wii double-u"). I feel like this name both capitalizes on our previous successes and expands our brand to reach twice as many gamers.
[A.J.] Why would that be the case?
[Reggie] Because it's for double the "U"s out there.
[A.J.] Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you agree earlier that the Wii U initially confused gamers? Why would you just add another U?
[Reggie] I like U. I like U a lot. In fact, I'm going to change my name to Reggie Fils-Aim-U.
[A.J.] Are you seriously going to change your name?
[Reggie] No, and on top of that; I'm not really Reggie Fils-Aime. You're just typing this whole interview yourself because it's April Fools' Day and you thought it would be funny.
[A.J.] I see. Well, is it?
[Reggie] Not really.
[A.J.] Okay, thank you for your time. I'm looking forward to playing the Wii UU.
[Reggie] K, bye! Love you!
