If you're in the mood for some classic puzzle game fun then Kirby's Avalanche is here with its cute characters and satisfying gameplay.

Kirby's Avalanche is a classic SNES game that's available with a basic Nintendo Switch Online subscription. 🎮

Modern puzzle game fans may look at Kirby's Avalanche and think that it seems familiar. Well, that's because it's essentially a reskin of Super Puyo Puyo which debuted in Japan over a year prior. It might also be familiar to Sonic the Hedgehog fans because it looks nearly identical to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine which itself is a reskin of the original Puyo Puyo. Western game companies sure loved reskinning puzzle games back in the day; I mean, just look at Tetris Attack and Panel de Pon. v1d30chumz 35-172-230-154

With its history out of the way, 1995's Kirby's Avalanche (also known as Kirby's Ghost Trap) is certainly an outstanding puzzle game. It may not have a wide variety of modes or nifty mechanics that got introduced in later Puyo Puyo games but what's here is still undeniably special no matter if you're playing solo or against a friend. For those unfamiliar with Puyo Puyo, you basically try to connect 4 of the same colour blob which pops them in the hopes that the blobs stacked on top will fall into place and create chains. If you manage to trigger a chain massive enough, it can bury your opponent in clear garbage blobs that may just be enough to top them out as you claim victory. It's challenging stuff that rewards your ability to plan ahead and if you want to watch me play it then check out my gameplay video:

I'm very happy that Kirby's Avalanche is available for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers as not only is it a great puzzle game, it also shows a side of Kirby that we don't normally see. Specifically, Kirby almost never speaks and Kirby's Avalanche may just be the only game where he says anything besides his typical cute little nonsense noises. It's very odd to read dialogue from him in the first place but the fact that he's full of puns and sarcastic taunts here is absolutely hilarious, especially considering just how out of character it is. 😆

Besides a basic practice mode, Kirby's Avalanche consists of a single player arcade mode where you try to beat a succession of classic Kirby enemies and a 2 player Vs. mode. This might not sound like much but keep in mind that you can put your skills to the test by competing online thanks to the Nintendo Switch Online integration that makes it easy to join friends and create multiplayer sessions. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

I don't think Broom Hatter can survive Kirby's latest massive chain

There you have it; our very first Switch Retro Spotlight. Kirby's Avalanche is one heck of a fun puzzle game with plenty of unexpected attitude thrown in for good measure. Stay tuned every Friday as I plan on putting one of these up each week. 😊
