Nintendo Switch Online comes with some awesome benefits and 2 of which are a couple of nifty spins on classic games. However, if you could only play one, which one would it be? Allow me to break down each game and don't forget to vote at the end!
Last year, Tetris 99 knocked everyone's socks off with its modern take on the familiar puzzler. Who knew that taking an existing game and allowing 99 online players to compete simultaneously could be so fun? Well, it definitely is and many gamers remain grateful that Nintendo took a chance by releasing such an innovative incentive to subscribe to Switch Online.
For the unfamiliar, you basically play Tetris as best you can as lines that you make cause garbage rows to raise other players' playfields. Once a player reaches the top, they're out of the competition as one would expect. It's such a simple formula yet since its initial release, many updates have made for an impressively comprehensive experience and when you factor in paid DLC and fun modes such as Team Battle, you're left with one awesome package. Plus, even when you lose, you can level-up and earn nifty rewards.
Needless to say, Tetris 99's structure makes for some exhilarating online battles, especially if you manage to get in the top 10 as things escalate quickly and become extremely challenging. If you ever manage to win a match then the feeling would be out-of-this-world great. I imagine that people will still be playing this for years to come as it's immediately gratifying stuff whether you win or lose.
Super Mario Bros. 35
Over a year and a half later, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. 35 and it's set up almost exactly like Tetris 99 except you play levels from the original Super Mario Bros. Trying to play through Super Mario Bros. without biting the dust once is tough enough on its own so imagine what it's like when online players constantly send their defeated baddies over to your game. The resulting formula is a ton of fun, especially if you've been playing Super Mario Bros. for as long as I have. Throw in a rewarding level-up system, enjoyable challenges, and the ability to purchase power-ups before each game and you're in for quite a nostalgic yet modernized online treat.
It's very fitting that Super Mario Bros. 35 released for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and that it has 35 players compete at the same time. I honestly think that this is one of the best ways that Nintendo could have celebrated this monumental game in Mario's history and my hat is off to whoever thought of such a clever concept. Running and jumping around a collection of familiar stages is an absolute ton of fun and the fact that you can experience it with so many other Mario fans simultaneously is the icing on the cake.Super Mario Bros. 35 Review
It was fun to examine both of these online adaptations of classic games but it's time to pick a winner which is going to be...
Winner Tetris 99
Survival is the name of the game in both Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35 yet the online competitive aspect of Tetris 99 simply clicks much more immediately than it does in Super Mario Bros. 35. There's just something about the frantic block-dropping formula that never gets old and it makes for a thoroughly exciting online multiplayer funfest that's hard not to enjoy, too. That being said, both games are an exceptional amount of fun and I plan on enjoying both for as long as they're available. One of these days, I might even win a game of Tetris 99 and then there will be even more reason to celebrate!
That's just my opinion. Agree? Disagree? Vote now!
