Welcome to my walkthrough of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker; in this guide, I'll show you how to beat the game one step at a time while leaving dungeon completion up to you because that makes things much more enjoyable.

Explore the Great Sea

Make sure you pick up all of the rupee drops that you can even if you just want to complete the game. In the GameCube version, you need a total of 3385 rupees and in the Wii U HD version, you need 1395 rupees. You'll need even more rupees to pay for useful items like extra bottles and heart pieces. Make sure you find both wallet upgrades for 5000 rupee capacity. Anyway, please refer to this map while following the guide so you know the locations of the islands: v1d30chumz 3-239-112-140

Version Differences

I own the GameCube version of The Wind Waker so that's what you'll see in this guide. With that being said, these are the biggest things that you need to look out for if you're playing the HD version:

  • You have to pay Tingle for only 3 Triforce charts for just 1194 rupees
  • The Tingle Tuner has been removed; instead, you have Tingle bottles which will send a message to a random player in Miiverse and any loot that you needed Tingle bombs for are obtained with regular bombs instead
  • The Swift Sail is a new item that's available for purchase on Windfall Island and while using it, your speed is doubled and the wind is always at your back
  • The bottom of the Savage Labyrinth now contains the Hero's Charm instead of a heart piece
  • Rupees stay on the ground longer before disappearing
  • You'll find out about most of the other differences as you play but there are a ton of quality of life changes

Outset Island

Enjoy the opening cutscenes. Hyrule was a prosperous Kingdom, Ganon tried to destroy it, he was stopped by the Hero of Time, Ganon returned to life, and then he seems to have successfully destroyed the Kingdom and no one knows what happened to that Kingdom. However, the tradition to garb boys in green clothes like the Hero of Time continued to this day on Outset Island. Presently on Outset Island, it's Link's birthday and for some reason, he's sleeping on top of an observation tower. Why doesn't he sleep in a bed like a normal person? Anyway, time to go visit your grandma and see what she wants to give you.

Side-hop off the tower into the water. Jump over some rocks between the 2 islands to pick up 15 rupees. Grandma's house is the western house on the western island. Before going in, crawl into the crawlspace under the house to find a secret chest containing 100 rupees. Crawl back out and go in the house. Grandma will give you the hero's clothes but you don't seem very happy to wear them since it's too warm for the weather. Climb back up the tower where you met Aryll and she'll give you a birthday present: a telescope! Use it to spy the Rito (bird guy) then look up to see the giant bird and watch the cutscene. The bird will drop the pirate girl onto the forest above the eastern island.

Go into the eastern house on the west island. Talk to the old sensei, Orca, and complete the sword tutorial. After the tutorial, you'll keep the sword. Go to the east island and take the path up to the summit, slash the trees to get through, climb all the way up, and cross the bridge. In the forest, you see the pirate girl, Tetra, hanging from a tree so go and save her from the monsters. After more cutscenes, the giant bird will come back but this time, it captures your sister, Aryll! Link desperately jumps off a cliff but he's saved by Tetra. The pirates agree to sail Link to the bird's lair, the Forsaken Fortress but not before you find a shield.

Return to Grandma's house and climb the ladder but the shield will be gone. Drop down the ladder and talk to Grandma who will reluctantly give you the shield and ask you to look for Aryll. Talk to Tetra with your shield in-hand and you'll set sail.

Forsaken Fortress

On the pirate ship, go into the cabin and down the stairs and play Niko's game. Make it across all the platforms and open the chest containing the spoils bag. Go back up to the surface and climb the ladder and speak to Tetra at the top of the crow's nest. The pirates will fire you into the Forsaken Fortress but unfortunately, you'll lose your sword. Climb the stairs and when you get to the big open area, do another 180° turn to climb more stairs. Just keep on climbing up until you reach a ladder to the first searchlight and slay the monster operating it. Actually, this searchlight isn't required but it's easiest to get to.

You need to get to the southeastern floodlight and disable that one, too. The fastest way (not recommended for casual players) is to retrace your steps and make a precise jump through a window. Otherwise, you have to go through the passages in the fortress's interior. Then, climb the ladder, get caught by a moblin or searchlight, and get thrown in jail. Crawl out of jail and open the dungeon map chest then fall down, press the button behind some pots, and open the chest for a piece of heart ❤️!

With the southeastern floodlight disabled, go to the large northwestern room and use a barrel to sneak into the door in the back. Take the path behind the big tower, sidle across the ledge, and climb up the tower. You won't be spotted only if you disabled the correct floodlight. Anyway, pick up your sword and defeat the monster guarding the door. You'll find your sister but the big bird will pick you up and throw you across the sea.

Link retrieved his sword that he lost and is ready to save his sister

Windfall Island

You're saved by a talking boat called the King of Red Lions. The boat promises to help you save your sister but first, you have to buy a sail somewhere on Windfall Island. How did the boat sail to Windfall Island without a sail? Who knows? Open one of the nearby doors and free Tingle from the prison. Find a hidden crawlspace in the back and slowly make your way through the maze. Make sure you don't crawl onto the wooden trapdoors. Make it through and you'll find a chest containing the Picto Box. When you leave, crawl onto the trapdoor to get out faster.

Go to Zunari's stall and buy "that" for 80 rupees. Of course, "that" is the sail you're looking for. You should have at least 100 rupees from the chest under Grandma's house but if you don't have the rupees yet, don't worry about it. Go into the school in the town center, talk to the teacher, talk to the blue-shirt boy, and play hide-and-seek with the Killer Bees. You have to chase them when you find them as well. Here's the boys' and girls' locations:

  • Behind a bush near the town center
  • On top of the big tree near the annoying old man who chases you
  • Behind the bomb shop
  • Behind a grave overlooking the sea

The Killer Bees will award you with a piece of heart ❤️! Then, talk to the teacher who will give you 50 rupees! Talk to the blue-shirt boy again who will tell you about a joy pendant in a tree. Bonk the tree near the bomb shop then deliver it to the teacher who'll be overjoyed and give you 20 rupees.

Go in the other door in the town square and win the squid game. It costs 10 rupees per attempt, but make sure you bought the sail first before attempting this game. After you win, you'll get another piece of heart ❤️! Win the game again to win a sea chart! Try to get a score no better than 20 for your first 2 attempts. Finally, win the game with a score of 19 or better and Salvadore will give you a second Sea Chart! This game is heavily luck-based so thankfully for us, there's a handy tool linked below that will calculate the best moves for you. When you're ready, return to the King of Red Lions, begin sailing east and start your adventure at sea.

You might not like it but this is what peak Sploosh Kaboom performance looks like

Pawprint Isle

This is an island that's one tile east of Windfall Island. First, talk to a sailor on the strange brown vessel. He will give you a free sea chart! Crawl into a tiny hole inside the big shell in the middle of the island. Walk through the mini-dungeon and open a chest containing a piece of heart ❤️! If you collected all of the pieces of heart so far, your life total will increase to 4. Finally, leave the dungeon. There are other items you can get later once you have bombs and the grappling hook.

Dragon Roost Island

On the island, the King of Red Lions will give you a magical baton called The Wind Waker and show you how to use it. Go through the passage, swim over to the stone tablets, and use your Wind Waker to learn the Wind's Requiem! You can use this song to change the wind's direction. Specifically, it's a very useful song to use while sailing or flying. Go back to the boat, throw the nearby bomb flowers next to the boulders to clear them, and make you way up the island.

Dragon Roost Island is the home of the Rito, a bird-like people. Unfortunately, you'll have to help solve their problem. In short, you have to calm down the great dragon, Valoo. Go into one of the upstairs rooms and speak to Medli who will give you a letter. Set the letter to your active items (it's found in your new delivery bag) then go downstairs, find Prince Komali, and give him the letter. Komali is not impressed so leave him alone for now and find Medli near the dried-up hot spring.

Speak to Medli who wants to meet Valoo and find out what's wrong. Pick her up and stand on the nearby rock, wait for the wind to blow in the right direction, and throw her across the large gap. She will then give you your first bottle. Fill it up with water, climb up, water the dried-up plants, and then it will sprout into a bomb flower. Throw the bomb on top of the boulder to destroy it and the pond will fill with water. Swim across the pond, use more bombs to knock down the statues, and enter your first dungeon: Dragon Roost Cavern. Go and save Medli who will award you with a grappling hook. Defeat Gohma (a rock monster who's been biting Valoo's tail) then Valoo will finally calm down. Prince Komali will give you his most precious possession, Din's Pearl.

Bomb Island

Learn the Wind's Requiem at the stone tablet if you haven't already, go into Beedle's shop ship, and buy a bait bag and bait. You'll need a lot of bait so feel free to fill up the whole bag with 8 sets. Set sail to the south by using your Wind Waker to change the wind direction. You'll be interrupted by a fish who'll add Dragon Roost Island to your sea chart. Whenever you pass by an uncharted island in your sea chart, look for the jumping fish. Spread some bait nearby and the fish will chart the island for you. In fact, there are 49 of these fish, one for each island on the Sea Chart. Sail 2 tiles south of Dragon Roost Island and visit Bomb Island. Talk to the telescope guy and sail to where he's pointing the telescope, board the submarine and defeat all enemies inside to find another empty bottle!

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Bomb Island screenshot
These telescope guys might give you useful information

Forest Haven

Sail south to the Forest Haven and you'll watch a short cutscene. Travel upstream by jumping over the platforms and use your grappling hook to swing over the large gaps. Otherwise, the river will pull you downstream if you fall in. Go into the Forest Haven and explore the area until you meet the Great Deku Tree but several chuchus will appear on its face. Make quick work of the chuchus with your sword and the Deku Tree will thank you. However, you'll need to find the Korok, Makar, who fell into the Forbidden Woods. Jump into the nearby Baba Bud which is the plant that shoots you in the air. You need to climb up a chain of Baba Buds to make it to the top of the tree and claim the Deku Leaf. Use the Deku Leaf to glide down to the grass arrow.

Use your Wind Waker to change the wind direction, make sure your magic power is full, and take flight to the smaller island. Adjust the wind direction again, fill your magic meter again, and fly into the cyclone to gain some height. Glide to the island while avoiding the flying potatoes. Find the boomerang in the dungeon (a very powerful item, by the way) and rescue Makar by beating the dungeon boss Kalle Demos. You and Makar will be teleported back to the forest so you can enjoy the Korok Festival. The Deku Tree will also give you Farore's Pearl as a reward.

The Search for Jabun

Travel to Greatfish Isle (B4) which is marked on your Sea Chart and watch the cutscenes. There's a piece of heart ❤️ here but it's very well-hidden. If you have enough magic power, climb the spiral tower, change the wind direction, and fly west towards a well-concealed area then open the chest. Set sail to Windfall Island (D2) where the pirates are staying and climb into the back of the bomb shop. Make sure you're paying attention to the dialogue and remember the pirates' password because it's different for each save file. Go to the pirate ship, try to go into the door, and enter the password. Niko is the only one around and you have to play his game by jumping in between the ropes and making it to the other side of the room before time runs out. Open up the chest to receive some bombs.

Then, sail one tile northwest to North Fairy Island (C1) to find a fairy island containing a larger rupee bag that can hold 1000 rupees. Sail south all the way to Outset Island (B7). Climb up to the forest using your Deku Leaf to fly over the broken bridge. Bomb the boulder blocking the fairy fountain and collect an even larger rupee bag that holds 5000 rupees! Collect a fairy in your bottle and deliver it to grandma in her house and use it on her. Then, the fairy will heal grandma and she'll make you an amazing soup that heals your health and magic power, doubles your attack power until the next time you take damage, and also has 2 servings. Return to grandma with an empty bottle any time you want more.

If you have fewer than 30 bombs, buy more in Beedle's shop ship. Sail behind Outset Island into the huge whirlpool. Whip out your cannon and shoot down the large stone slab. Once it's completely destroyed, you'll go inside and receive Nayru's Pearl from Jabun. The curse which made it always night-time will be broken and soon, daybreak will come.

Useful Fairy Fountains

Wallet upgrades are found on Outset Island (B7) and North Fairy Island (C1) but I already suggested you get these in the previous section. South Fairy Island (D6) and East Fairy Isle (E3) contain bomb capacity upgrades. Go to Two-Eye Reef (D7), defeat the Big Octo, and the fairy will double your magic meter. I also recommend visiting the nearby Angular Isles (E7) and climb to the top of the island to find a piece of heart ❤️!

Placing the 3 Pearls

You need to place the 3 pearls on the 3 islands that are marked on your map. Once you place all of them, the Tower of the Gods will rise from the ocean and you can continue with the next part of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Placing the 3 Pearls screenshot
The Triangle Islands are home to these statues as well as a few monsters

Tower of the Gods

You need to sail into the huge structure and complete the Tower of the Gods dungeon. In the first section, make sure to explore all of the different rooms branching out of the main room and in the second section, there are 3 paths; start with the right one. Escort the black statues from each path into the middle room. You'll find the bow which is an amazing ranged weapon. The third section is just a linear area so fight your way through and defeat the dungeon boss, Gohdan. After defeating the boss, you'll go on top of the tower and use your grappling hook to ring the bell. Then, the King of Red Lions will take you to the kingdom beneath the waves.

Getting the Master Sword

Go into Hyrule Castle which is home to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker's Master Sword. In the large central area, arrange the 3 triangular blocks in the center in the shape of the Triforce then the Triforce will glow and the statue will move to reveal a hidden chamber. Go inside and take the Master Sword out of its pedestal. Time will unfreeze and now, you have to destroy all of the monsters if you want to escape. Defeat the moblins with your sword and slay the darknuts with a couple of quick spin attacks to get rid of their armor; you can also wait for them to attack you and press the special action button. Once they're all dealt with, talk to the King of Red Lions to return to the surface.

With the Master Sword in hand, we're unstoppable!

Ballad of Gales

Provided you have enough arrows, go to one of the cyclones at Mother and Child Isles (B2), Shark Island (C6), or Northern Triangle Isle (D3). As soon as you sail near the cyclone, you'll begin an encounter with Cyclos where you have to quickly shoot him with your bow 3 times. He can be quite hard to hit and if you fail, you seem to always get blown to Greatfish Isle. If you manage to hit him 3 times, he will teach you the Ballad of Gales which is a useful song that lets you travel to several different islands instantly.

The Ballad of Gales lets you fast-travel across the ocean

Return to Forsaken Fortress

Return to the Forsaken Fortress (A1) and bomb the front door to get in. Climb up the same stairs as your first visit, go across the big plaza, and try to open the big door. This time, you don't need to avoid the searchlights. Phantom Ganon will fight you and he can only be damaged if you use your Master Sword to reflect his balls of energy. Once Phantom Ganon is incapacitated, open the chest to get the skull hammer! Don't worry about turning off the searchlights again. Go to the top of the tower the same way you did on your first visit. When you reach a very long ledge that you needed to sidle across, don't sidle or else you might be attacked by bombs. Instead, take out your grappling hook and grapple across. Hit the peg with your hammer, go into the big door, and go save your sister.

After the cutscene, the pirates rescue your sister while it's your job to take out the big bird (AKA Helmaroc King). If you roll all the way up the big room, you'll be too fast for the bird's attacks. Otherwise, if you fall behind and the bird takes out the floor in front of you, you can use your grappling hook to grapple across the big gaps. At the very top, use your skull hammer to smash the bird's face plate and continue on with the fight. The giant bird fight is fairly easy but it's also long. All you have to do is avoid the bird's attacks by rolling. Once it tries to peck you, use your hammer to smash the face plate. Once the face plate is destroyed, feel free to use your sword instead. After besting the Helmaroc King, go into Ganon's hideout, and enjoy the cutscenes.

The giant bird is no more and everyone in Forsaken Fortress knows it

Hyrule Second Visit

You'll take control of Link in Hyrule with Tetra following you. Take her to the same room that you picked up the Master Sword but this time, the King of Hyrule is waiting for you. Tetra also transforms into her real identity, Princess Zelda 🧝‍♀️! After all of the cutscenes, leave Hyrule Castle and go to the surface once again. Now, you have to find the 2 sages and get them to the 2 temples in order to restore your Master Sword's power to repel evil.

The King of Hyrule finally gives us the full story rundown

Fire and Ice Arrows

The locations of the 2 temples will appear on your map but don't go to them right away. Play the Ballad of Gales (provided you already learned it as I suggested in the Ballad of Gales section of this guide) then teleport to Mother and Child Isle (B2). There, the fairy will enchant your bow so you can use fire and ice arrows! The only way to leave the island is to once again play the Ballad of Gales.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Fire and Ice Arrows screenshot
The Ballad of Gales is the only way to access the large "mother" island

Return to Windfall Island

Return to Windfall Island (D2) during the day and visit the grave overlooking the ocean. Talk to the dancer and take out your Wind Waker. Then, she will teach you the Song of Passing. Use this song to switch between day and night. Talk to Mila who's waiting near Zunari's shop (she only appears at night so use the Song of Passing if you need to) then walk away in the direction of the shop. Follow stealthily behind her or just wait nearby the shop. Either way, make sure Mila doesn't see you. If she catches you, just walk into any door and try again. After she starts looting the safe, go up and talk to her, and then select all the default dialogue options. She'll reward you with an empty bottle!

More Fairy Fountains

Go to West Fairy Island (A3) and Thorned Fairy Island (G4). Both of these islands require the hammer to enter and increase your maximum arrow capacity.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker More Fairy Fountains screenshot
Hammer the 3 pegs to go into the fairy fountain

Fire Mountain

Go to Fire Mountain (F3) and shoot an ice arrow at the column of fire shooting out from the volcano. You have only 5 minutes to do the next area so climb up the mountain and drop down into the volcano. Jump across the platforms and defeat all the monsters in the next area to reveal a hidden chest containing the power bracelets. These bracelets will let you lift up heavy stones; for instance, the one right in front of you. Leave Fire Mountain the same way you got in.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Fire Mountain screenshot
Fight the enemies in the volcano to get the Power Bracelets

Ice Ring Isle

Next, go to Ice Ring Isle (E6) and shoot a fire arrow at the island. Once again, there's a 5 minute timer for you to explore the island. Find a ledge up to the upper section of the island and jump across the ice blocks. Make sure you have enough space to run forward and gain speed; otherwise, you'll just fall down. Then, go into the dragon's mouth and fall into the hole. Complete the straightforward mini-dungeon and open a chest containing iron boots. Put on the iron boots to escape without getting blown away by the wind. You can also fall down the hole and fight all the enemies in this area to find a secret chest containing 100 rupees!

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Ice Ring Isle screenshot
You can cheese Ice Ring Isle by flying into the dragon's mouth but I fell in the water

Earth Temple

Go to Headstone Island (C7). The quickest way to get there is to play the Ballad of Gales, warp to Outset Island, and sail one tile east. Lift the stone head with the power bracelet, approach the stone tablet, and use your Wind Waker to learn a new song: the Earth God's Lyric! There will be a cutscene and the Zora will advise you to find the one who holds the golden harp. It's actually Medli on Dragon Roost Island who owns it.

So, teleport to Dragon Roost Island (F2), climb up to the post office mini-game, and go through the doorway outside. You should hear Medli's instrument. Cross the gap with your grappling hook and you'll find Medli easily. Use your Wind Waker and play the Earth God's Lyric. Soon, she will awaken as the Earth Sage and ask you to take her to the temple at Headstone Island. Again, teleport to Outset Island and go one tile east to get to Headstone Island (C7). You and Medli will play the Earth God's Lyric at the stone tablet to destroy it and enter the Earth Temple.

In the Earth Temple, make sure you bring Medli along with you for the whole dungeon. You can carry her, throw her to make her fly forward, take control of her with the Command Melody, and you can even use her harp to reflect beams of light. If you ever lose track of her, she is a purple circle on the dungeon map. The dungeon item is the mirror shield which lets you solve the light puzzles within the dungeon. Defeat Jalhalla and then you'll complete the dungeon and Medli will half-restore your Master Sword's power to repel evil.

Beat all enemies in this room to get a sea chart!

Wind Temple

Teleport to Windfall Island and sail one tile north to Gale Isle (D1) then put on your iron boots and walk past the wind. Destroy the statue using your Skull Hammer and approach the stone tablet to learn another new song, the Wind God's Aria. You will talk to the old sage, Fado. He tells you to find the one who owns his violin but it's Makar. Teleport to Forest Haven (F6) and jump into the waterfall with musical notes coming out of it. Talk to Makar in his hideout then take out your Wind Waker and play the Wind God's Aria for him. Makar will then awaken as the Wind Sage. Sail one tile north of Windfall Island to Gale Isle (D1) once again. Go in front of the stone tablet and play the Wind God's Aria with Makar nearby then the statue will be destroyed. Fall down the hole and you'll be in the Wind Temple.

In the Wind temple, bring Makar along with you for the whole dungeon. Makar cannot fly you across ledges but you have your Deku Leaf anyway. Makar can plant trees in soil patches which is vital to progress through the dungeon. There will be a section of the dungeon when Makar is captured and put in prison but simply go through the dungeon without him until you get the hookshot then use it and the iron boots to destroy the big statue sealing Makar's prison. The dungeon is over once you beat the big sand dragon, Molgera. Makar will fully restore your Master Sword which you'll need later to defeat Ganondorf.

Before moving on, make sure you have the In-Credible Chart among your Sea Charts. If you don't have it, make sure you've rescued Tingle from the Windfall Island jail then find any shaking mailbox and pay the postage fee of 201 rupees. You can consult your In-Credible Chart to see all of the Triforce Chart locations. When you're ready, skip to the Wii U HD Version section if you're playing that version.

Triforce Hunt: GameCube Version

Find each Triforce Chart, get them deciphered by Tingle at Tingle Island for 398 rupees each, and then consult the charts to find the colorful glowing beams at sea. Here are each of the Triforce Charts and their corresponding locations:

To beat the game 100%, you have to finish many fun chores like hitting Orca 1000 times

Ganon's Tower

After collecting every Triforce shard, return to the Tower of the Gods (E4) and watch the cutscene. Go down to Hyrule and return to the Master Sword's chamber to find Zelda but it's a ghost and you'll be ambushed by darknuts. Defeat them, leave Hyrule Castle via the other side, and destroy the invisible barrier with your Master Sword. Take the path to Ganon's Tower.

For the first section, complete the 4 side doors but you'll have to re-battle 4 dungeon bosses then go through the middle door. For the second section, go through the right door and jump down the chasm then defeat the phantom Ganon and go through the door that the sword hilt points to. Repeat this for the next few rooms. In the last room, you'll get the light arrows. Return to the starting room for the second section, destroy the phantom Ganon, pick up the black sword, and use it to destroy the big door. For the third section, just destroy all the enemies as you climb up the staircase but you can one-shot them with the Light Arrows. In the next room, destroy Puppet Ganon then climb up to the top of the tower and defeat the final boss fight of the game. Congratulations on beating The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker! 😄
