Hey, Bayonetta's shadow is a butterfly!

The witch is back

Bayonetta 3 tells an absurd and hard-to-follow story and as you watch each chapter unfold, you won't even care that you don't know exactly what's going on because it's just awesome to take it all in. I definitely don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say that man-made monsters known as Homunculi are invading different realities so it's your job to leap through dimensions in order to stop these dastardly foes and figure out just where the heck they're coming from. From start to finish, you'll meet all new characters, see some familiar faces, and it all culminates in a hyperactive funfest that you'll definitely want to play through again. 😄 v1d30chumz 44-210-77-106

What a spectacle

Not only is Bayonetta 3's story ridiculous, you'll also find yourself playing through many unique scenarios and battling tons of distinct foes throughout. The most notable feature is the Demon Slave system where you can summon demons to fight alongside you. Meanwhile, there are segments where you control these demons in order to traverse the environment or survive a dire situation and these moments stand out as excellent fun that diversifies the gameplay drastically. Of course, Bayonetta's combat remains tight and action-packed as always and I enjoyed switching up my Demon Masquerade weapons regularly to add even more variety to the equation. 🦋

Action-packed campaign

When you combine Bayonetta 3's undeniably over-the-top story and varied action segments, you're left with a campaign that never gets boring and this is coming from someone with an attention span of negative 2. Watching Bayonetta and her chums fight giant enemies as they leap around only for you to take control and unleash a wicked combo of melee, long-range, and demon attacks is thrilling to say the least. However, it's 2022 and simply watching cutscenes isn't enough anymore. Specifically, Bayonetta 3 has a lot of cutscenes and they can be rather lengthy. The fact that they show Bayonetta hopping between platforms and fighting made me wonder why they couldn't simply make you play out these scenarios albeit with dialogue over them; that would have made things a lot more fun. 💡

Hone your witchcraft

Another aspect of Bayonetta 3 that goes above and beyond is its amount of content. I'm happy simply re-playing missions in order to outdo my previous efforts but on top of that, you can also discover hidden challenges, explore to find goodies, spend earned currencies on upgrades, and much more. I also like small touches like how you can see Bayonetta's equipped accessories actually reflected on her character model. Plus, enhancing your favourite Demon Slave / Demon Masquerade weapon combo by unlocking moves and upgrades makes every bit of progress a rewarding endeavour. Oh, and there's photo mode (can't wait to see what sort of lewd pics are going to inevitably emerge on social media) as well as a gallery where you can unlock art and music tracks by finding them in stages. 🎵

It may be fun but it's not perfect

Finally, allow me to discuss a couple of issues that took away from Bayonetta 3's fun. First, there are some presentational issues with the worst being frame rate drops during busy cutscenes. One such scene was so fast and choppy that it made me dizzy. Also, some of the character models and environments aren't quite up to snuff, especially the super-dated background characters. Last but not least, there are so many moves and constantly-changing gameplay scenarios getting thrown at you that it's hard to remember how to perform everything all of the time. Perhaps the controls should be more consistent among the different gameplay situations or maybe they should be simplified but I occasionally found it annoying to fumble around while trying to remember how to pull of certain moves. 😳

Yes, ma'am!

In defiance of a time when many game series are opting to mature, Bayonetta 3 raises a giant middle finger and that's awesome. Believe it or not, it's even more over-the-top than you'd expect so strap on some high heels and get ready for some action.

  • + Phenomenal gameplay that refreshingly retains the series' iconic style and feel
  • + Campaign is jam-packed with variety
  • + Loads of rewarding replay incentives
  • - With so many cool cutscenes, I wish there was more interactivity implemented
  • - Certain moves can be hard to remember
  • - Minor presentational quibbles
8.9 out of 10
