Johnny Turbo's Arcade

Before getting to this compilation, I just wanted to discuss the Johnny Turbo's Arcade lineup of games which you can purchase on modern consoles, especially Nintendo Switch which features all 17 releases. The reason why these games are so cool is that they're ports of classic Data East arcade games except for Heavy Burger which is a fantastic original game that's great fun with friends. Unfortunately, many of the games included in Evercade Data East Collection 1 are console adaptations which can be inferior so if you want to play the arcade versions of Bad Dudes, Two Crude Dudes, and Fighter's History; definitely give the Johnny Turbo's Arcade lineup a try. Oh, and it also features the underrated sequel Super Burger Time as well as both arcade Joe and Mac games which are awesome.

NES games

First up, we have 4 NES games. One game that I have fond memories of from back in the day is Burnin' Rubber (AKA Bump 'n' Jump) which plays like an overhead 2D Burnout since you slam into your competitors then watch them explode and you'll have to leap over chasms, too. Meanwhile, Bad Dudes is a solid 2D beat 'em up that's much more fun with a friend so it's too bad that you have to play it solo here. Speaking of brawlers, Karate Champ is included which is a very early 1-on-1 fighter that actually inspired the creation of Mortal Kombat years after its release. However, it's nearly unplayable nowadays, especially this awkward NES port. Last but not least, Burger Time is a stone cold classic that has held up beautifully and this NES adaptation is just as fun and challenging as the arcade original.

What time is it? It's Burger Time!

Genesis games

Next on the menu, here are a couple of Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games. If you enjoyed Bad Dudes then you'll be happy that its 16-bit sequel Two Crude Dudes is included here as well. Even though it's more fun with a friend, there's no denying that it's a blast solo with its wide variety of enemies, crazy scenarios, and satisfying moves such as the ability to throw enemies around. One game that I never heard of before is Midnight Resistance which could best be described as a Contra clone although it's a very good one. It's simple run 'n' gun reaction-based entertainment and the fact that you can automatically shoot as you run and jump around is a welcome treat.

Super Nintendo games

Finally, 4 SNES games are included and I have good news; they're all excellent in their own unique ways. For starters, Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics is a wonderful 2D platformer that fans of the genre will love, especially if you enjoy a healthy dose of goofy humour. For fighting game fans, Fighter's History may not be as timeless as Street Fighter II but it's a solid fighter that has held up surprisingly well. As a more obscure inclusion, Side Pocket offers an interesting take on pool with physics that take a while to get used to but once you do, it becomes an impressively enjoyable high score chaser. With all of that in mind, my favourite Super NES game here is probably Magical Drop II which features a charming cast of characters as well as simple yet highly competitive puzzle gameplay that I can't get enough of.

Magical Drop II offers great characters and rewarding competitive puzzle mechanics

When all is said and done, Evercade Data East Collection 1 is a top-notch compilation of retro treasures that'll appeal to a wide variety of gamers with old-school tastes. It really is impressive how well most of these games have held up over the decades.

  • + Includes a wide variety of excellent console games from many genres
  • + Joe & Mac 2 is platforming gold
  • + Midnight Resistance is a cool hidden gem
  • - Some games are more fun while playing multiplayer which the Evercade lacks
  • - Karate Champ hasn't aged well
