Although it's been done before, running your own RPG shop is such a clever premise for a game. Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! puts you in the jacket of a wannabe shopkeeper. Do you have the tots to run a successful business?
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is primarily played by choosing menu options in order to run your shop as smoothly as possible. The basic premise is that there are warriors all throughout the land who require weapons so you have to forge them at your shop in order to earn money and reputation as well as complete quests and such. To do so, you must command your staff that initially consists of Laura Craft, Bulk Bogan, and Russet Peters. As a Canadian who grew up watching a ton of stand-up comedy, it's hard to believe that Russell Peters is in a video game as a potato. Anyway, you must explore for and purchase materials as well as research new weapon types to forge the latest and greatest gear. You sell your weapons by either sending one of your employees to a prime location or warriors will sometimes come to you. Meanwhile, you have a dog to feed and a staff who needs to train as well as go on vacation once in a while. Juggling all these tasks is great fun, especially as you watch your shop grow into a go-to place for adventurers.
I already touched on some of the references that are featured in Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! but I merely scratched the surface. You'll come across characters that are from game franchises such as Hitman, Portal, Final Fantasy, and God of War. I even came across a potato version of Nikola Tesla. Thankfully, the sense of humour is fantastic and doesn't rely on these awesome references for laughs. When you factor in the super-cute visuals and delightful music that'll get your toes tapping, it's hard not to smile as you play.
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! features a ton of content to play through. The main campaign will have you move from workshop to workshop within the spacious world map as you become more renowned by forging epic weapons and completing tricky tasks. When you earn enough money (known as $tarch), you can even buy furniture and stuff that'll provide certain boosts for your crew. Besides the campaign, you can play through bonus scenarios from the main menu that are collectively known as Spud Tales. These have enjoyable themes and add a great deal of replay value if you want a change of pace from the main story mode.
Although I loved my time with Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?!, there are a few minor downsides that hold it back. First of all, the gameplay loop is certainly addictive but once you learn all of its complexities, it starts getting quite repetitive. I wish there were mini-games and such to help break things up a bit. The random events that occur are pretty fun but nothing substantially changes up the core gameplay. Next, things can get crazy hectic later on in the campaign. Specifically, it's annoying having to constantly deal with pop-up windows when you're trying to perform a crucial task. They could have definitely spaced these interruptions out more. One time, a few screens overlapped and I didn't know what to push. Speaking of menus, switching between them regularly has a delay so you're rarely sure if you actually pushed the intended button. It's a minor complaint but definitely irritating enough to mention.
If you're looking for a cute and funny shop simulator that you can enjoy as the hours tick away then you need to play Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! Its rewarding gameplay and lighthearted atmosphere make it a great game to zone out to.
