Last year, Daylight Studios introduced their fun-filled Holy Potatoes franchise to console gamers and now, its sequel has finally arrived so get ready to head from the weapon shop straight into space in a brand new adventure.
Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! follows the story of Captain Cassie. At the start of the campaign, her grandfather Jiji faces the evil Eclipse in an epic battle only to narrowly escape. From then on, you manage Cassie, Fay (her sister), and their crew in order to search for Jiji. However, Eclipse is on their tail so it's their job to jump from galaxy to galaxy in the hopes of avoiding a confrontation as well as finding their pep-pep. This is a super-clever premise for a story as it ties in with the gameplay beautifully. Plus, there are plenty of funny moments and goofy references throughout that consistently made me smile and once in a while, even laugh out loud. In short, Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! manages to perfectly blend its brilliant premise with the gameplay loop and it's hilarious to boot. v1d30chumz 34-231-247-88
Speaking of gameplay loop, Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! is basically divided into 2 gameplay scenarios: managing your ship and crew as well as exploring planets while battling enemy ships. The former involves training your crew, buying and selling materials and weapons, setting up and crafting weapons, and researching and buying new permanent enhancements. The latter will have you take part in a succession of scenarios after you select a planet to explore which may involve making a decision or battling an enemy ship. The turn-based battle system requires a great deal of strategy as each ship can attack each other's weapons or hull. I focused on the weapons because once those are gone, your opponent is useless and will usually bribe you to escape. It's entertaining stuff for sure.
As you manage your ship and explore planets, a day counter keeps reducing and once it reaches zero, Eclipse will catch up to you and needless to say, you don't want that to happen. In order to warp to the next galaxy, you must solve a problem in the current galaxy which usually involves exploring a few planets and watching a couple cutscenes. Once you accomplish your goal, you can freely explore with your remaining time in order to ensure that you're as strong as can be to take on the next galaxy. That being said, I constantly found myself with only a few days remaining after progressing further in the campaign. When you factor in the general small scope of each galaxy, it ends up feeling a bit too restrictive. My only other complaint is that the difficulty can be very random, especially later in the campaign as even some regular enemies unexpectedly decimated me. Recreating all of my weapons afterwards was no picnic.
Before wrapping this up, I should mention that the sights and sounds of Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! are downright fantastic. For starters, there are more than just potatoes this time around and meeting the large cast of goofy characters is an absolute treat. Their simplistic cartoon renderings are adorable and watching them interact is great fun. Meanwhile, the soundtrack is extremely well done with appropriately dire music during battle and chilled vibes whenever you're managing your ship. The sound effects are spot-on, too, and make blowing up ships all the more rewarding. Whoever designed the audio did a wonderful job.
Holy Potatoes! We're In Space?! offers a brilliant premise along with addictive gameplay that'll keep you hooked as you explore galaxy after galaxy. If you enjoy strategic battles and management games with a side of fries, this is a game for you.
