Missile Command: Re-Recharged

Missile Command: Recharged originally released in 2020 and if you read my review for it, you'd know that I felt like it could have done a lot more to make it a special experience. Thankfully, its developers revisited it and released this new iteration as it's a much-improved version that I wholeheartedly recommend. Whereas the original was essentially a barebones survival-based game, this 2022 remake features a great deal of content to sink your teeth into as well as tighter and more fully-featured gameplay. Well, we're off to a good start! v1d30chumz 44-210-77-106

What a step-up!

The first thing you'll notice about Missile Command: Recharged 2022 is just how striking its visuals are. The fact that there are actual backgrounds will make you feel like you're defending a city while the ever-changing hues and effects make it a delicious feast for the eyes. Plus, I enjoyed how whenever you get a power-up, the countdown is incorporated into a subtle overlay that changes the screen's colour as it moves down. From little touches like that to the complete visual overhaul in general; this version a vast improvement. 😄

Power-ups and enemies

Missile Command: Recharged 2022 features an excellent collection of power-ups and enemies that gradually introduce themselves as you play. From slowing down time and taking out tanks that enter the sides of the screen to causing massive explosions while UFOs ready their lasers; there is a lot of variety on display that will keep you on your toes, especially as the gameplay ramps up in speed and difficulty. Heck, there are even different missile types that cause larger explosions and may take out multiple cities and turrets if they strike! 😳

Revisit the origins of Missile Command

If you'd like to enjoy the original Missile Command games then be sure to check out Atari Flashback Classics which has the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Arcade versions; I highly recommend it. You can also play Atari Lynx Collection 1 for Evercade which has the Atari Lynx iteration that's bundled with Super Asteroids. Hey, that's 4 versions of a classic; pretty cool stuff! 🕹️

Campaign challenges

Of course, the most substantial addition to Missile Command: Recharged 2022 content-wise is its campaign of additional challenges. These adopt the 1980 original's concept of implementing limited missiles which adds a substantial amount of strategy to the equation and as you progress through the stages, you'll encounter many clever situations that are enjoyable to overcome. As you do so, your score for all stages will be totalled and submitted to the online leaderboards which is awesome and it adds some replay incentive, too. 🏆

Oh, and I should mention that both the Arcade mode and Missions campaign can be played via 2 player co-op so if you have an old-school arcade chum in your life then invite them over and shoot down some missiles together. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Some minor gripes

Now, even though Missile Command: Recharged 2022 is a massive improvement over the original release, it can still be a frustrating game at times. Specifically, some of the challenges are downright brutal to the point where even when I completed some of them, I felt like it was just by chance and not skill. This sense of randomness also ties into Arcade mode as sometimes, I'd play very well yet a random onslaught of unpredictable missiles with no power-ups in sight would strike and I'd be left virtually defenceless. When you combine this with the fact that you can purchase upgrades, it makes climbing the online leaderboards feel like less of an accomplishment. 😯

Do you ever feel overwhelmed in your daily activities?

I think it's fantastic that the developers completely remade 2020's Missile Command: Recharged and their efforts definitely show as it's a much-improved iteration and a super-enjoyable take on Atari's classic arcade game. See you on the leaderboards, chum! 😊
