Released games

4 out of the 10 games in NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection Vol.2 were already released on Nintendo Switch and I reviewed 2 of them. First, SNK Vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash is a nifty card battle RPG that provides some strategic entertainment while featuring a huge cast of iconic characters like Terry Bogard and Mega Man. v1d30chumz 44-210-77-106

Speaking of Mega Man, a cool inclusion is Mega Man Battle & Fighters which is a portable adaptation of the 2 arcade fighting games that released in the mid-'90s. For more, check out my full reviews:

The 2 already released games that I didn't review are Biomotor Unitron and Big Bang Pro Wrestling. Biomotor Unitron is a kind of enjoyable RPG where you strengthen your control over and customise a robot known as a Unitron and it's the sort of game that would have captured my imagination when I was a kid. Nowadays, it's very dated and tough to get absorbed in but I imagine that some folks may become engaged with tinkering around. Next is Big Bang Pro Wrestling which is a generic retro wrestling game that's kind of goofy. I personally never got into wrestling games so it's hard for me to judge it but I can see it being fun for old-school genre fans. 🤼‍♂️

I don't know what the heck is going on in Ganbare Neo Poke-Kun

New games

So, what else is included? Well, NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection Vol.2 has 6 brand new ports. My favourite of the bunch is Puzzle Link 2 as it plays a lot like another NeoGeo classic; Magical Drop. With that being said, it isn't nearly as enjoyable but it is fun to link the tiles and create combos. Once you get the hang of it, you'll realise that it's very easy and difficult to fail so I wish it was more challenging.

Next up is a couple of games that I truly do not understand and trust me; I tried. Ganbare Neo Poke-Kun is a silly simulation game that plays like a virtual pet where you try to keep a programmer happy as he makes games for you. These games aren't that good, though, so the only real value is in its goofy humour. The other oddball game is The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise which I'm assuming you need to know Japanese to play effectively. It's essentially a board game but being unable to read any of the onscreen text makes it virtually unplayable. Why couldn't they translate it for this compilation? It really boggles my mind how they thought it was okay not to.

Finally, there are 3 sports games with the best being Baseball Stars Color. In fact, I think every Baseball Stars game I played is superb and that includes this cute portable iteration. It may be simple but it's a ton of fun. Meanwhile, Pocket Tennis Color is certainly playable but it isn't all that entertaining due to its simplicity and learning when to swing is too tricky as well. Last on the list is NeoGeo Cup '98 Plus Color which may appeal to old-school soccer game fans but I found it to be far too generic to get any joy from playing it. ⚽

I wanted to enjoy NeoGeo Pocket Color Selection Vol.2 a lot more than I did because I love retro game compilations. However, with a line-up that's sure to perplex and bore as opposed to entertain; it's tough to recommend this collection.

  • + Mega Man Battle & Fighters is a lovely port of the obscure arcade games
  • + Card Fighters' Clash is full of nostalgia
  • + Baseball Stars Color and Puzzle Link 2 are neat
  • - The only truly worthwhile games are already available separately
  • - Certain games are nearly unplayable
  • - Most games just aren't all that fun
5.9 out of 10
