Each new Neptunia game brings something exciting to Gamindustri and now, the cast meets SENRAN KAGURA for some ninja action.

Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars follows in the footsteps of other Tamsoft-developed titles in the series such as MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies and Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online to offer a delightful action-packed formula that makes for an enjoyable change of pace from the usual RPG. Plus, the fact that it incorporates the cast from the SENRAN KAGURA franchise is a nifty aspect although admittedly, I'm not all that familiar with the series because it's a bit too over-the-top for my tastes. v1d30chumz 54-211-101-93

With that in mind, the huge cast of characters on display in Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars is excellent, especially when you consider just how silly the story is. Many of the dialogue scenes made me laugh out loud and the humour ranges from typical cheeky banter to robots trying to get social media likes. It's quite a ridiculous hodgepodge of personalities and off-the-wall scenarios that's sure to delight if you actually like to have fun and occasionally laugh as you play games. On top of all that, its gameplay is impressively fun, too.

Playing Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars is a lot like your average action RPG where you run around and unleash a series of melee and long-range attacks. Before heading to a stage, you choose 2 characters that you can swap between and each one has their own abilities and equipment set. No matter who you're playing as, the core gameplay remains intuitive and comprehensive.

That's the attitude, Green Heart!

By holding L1, you can perform skills that use quickly-replenishing energy while holding R1 lets you enter various modes that offer certain boosts. Besides that, you can dash out of harm's way, throw poison-dipped kunais and piercing shurikens, jump over ground attacks, and utilize items if you ever need a quick heal. All of this comes together to make for one action-packed and enjoyable formula.

On the other hand, setting up your characters is a bit humdrum as it's very basic with the most complex system being assigning Spirit Gems to a grid which only provides a slight boost in stats. One funny addition is the Peaches & Cream Meditation mini-game where you tilt the DualShock to balance on a giant peach which grants you a small bonus. There's also a shop and side-mission requests to complete as well as a gallery of unlocked movies and images. All of this is fairly nifty but I wish there was an online multiplayer component because previous Tamsoft Neptunia games had enjoyable online modes and I had a great deal of fun cooperating with fellow fans in them.

In addition to the lack of multiplayer, Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars can be a rather repetitive game because after you master the basics, every stage ends up feeling all too similar. I wish there was more variety to help break things up in this regard. Also, many of the environments are ripped straight from previous Neptunia games which consistently gave me déjà vu. When you combine these elements, you'll wish that you could explore more environments and enjoy more compelling and meaningful gameplay mechanics.

Purple Heart may be a winner but she still can't afford clothes

No matter how you slice it, Neptunia x SENRAN KAGURA: Ninja Wars is a great deal of fun, especially with its hilarious dialogue scenes and cheeky cast of characters. It could have been a lot more enjoyable with some sort of multiplayer component, though.

  • + Tight hack and slash ninja action with some cool abilities, boosts, and attacks
  • + Large cast of familiar characters
  • + Great sense of humour / silly mini-game
  • - Gameplay is generally repetitive and could use much more variety
  • - Many recycled environments
  • - Lacks any kind of multiplayer
