I'm a sucker for retro gaming and Picross and when you combine the 2, I have to play it so let's solve some classic Sega game puzzles.
Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition is essentially what you would expect from a Picross game except it features loads of puzzles based on classic 8 and 16-bit Sega games. From obscure titles to iconic characters; you're in for one enjoyable trip down memory lane when you solve these puzzles. Plus, the music that plays throughout is ripped from Sega's retro library with my favourite tune being the theme song from Fantasy Zone. Needless to say, it's a lot of retro gaming goodness to cram into one puzzle game!
With that being said, I wish that more was done with the Sega franchises to make this package more special. For example, if tidbits of each game were unlocked in a gallery whenever you completed a puzzle then that would have been awesome. Instead, you just solve puzzles from grid-based selection screens and the only unlockable is segments for the 3 Clip Picross puzzles that you acquire while playing through the regular puzzles. I mean; they're cool as you slowly see them come together but it's not all that rewarding.
Thankfully, Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition contains 4 distinct modes. Aside from the previously mentioned Clip Picross, you also get regular Picross puzzles, Mega Picross puzzles that feature Mega Line clues alongside the normal ones, and Color Picross which has you swap between 4 colours while solving puzzles with the number clues pertaining to specific colours. Each one of these modes requires its own set of strategies to master so you definitely won't get bored, especially considering there are 480 puzzles to solve. 😊
Although the amount of puzzles and variety of modes is substantial, I wish that Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition included much more to flesh out the experience. For example, a story mode like the one in Puyo Puyo Tetris would have been wonderful. Also, if the developers poured as much love into extras as Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S did, that would have elevated the overall package to new heights and made this a must-have Switch puzzler. As of now, if I recommend any Picross game for Switch, it's surely Ms. Miku's.
Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition is a solid offering with a welcome layer of nostalgia. However, the amount of missed opportunities is hard to overlook, especially weighing the fact that there are far superior unofficial Picross titles for Switch.
- + Familiar Picross fun that's stretched across 4 distinct modes
- + Classic Sega music, characters, and items
- + Loads of puzzles to solve
- - Besides music and assets, not much special is done with the franchises
- - Could use some sort of gallery mode or story-based campaign
