I love when excellent games get long-awaited sequels and thankfully, Rogue Legacy 2 was worth the wait as it's GOTY material.

Premise

I am a huge fan of the original Rogue Legacy and it's also one of the first games I've ever reviewed. For the unfamiliar, you play as a succession of descendants as you traverse a procedurally generated game world in the hopes of slaying its bosses and emerging victorious. However, being able to do so will require many, many attempts as it's incredibly difficult stuff. Thankfully, you'll become slightly more powerful between each run as you cash in earned currency for permanent upgrades. So, will you try to maximize your cash to become even stronger or get up the nerve to take on one of the bosses? Whatever you choose, you're bound to have a blast. v1d30chumz 34-231-247-88

Randomness

The thing is about each descendant that you play as is that they may not be quite right. Most of them will have some kind of condition that may be beneficial or a hindrance but rest assured; the negative traits come with boosts such as you'll earn more gold. Once you pick your descendant from a selection of 3, you'll spend your cash from the previous run and head into the Metroidvania world which itself is amazing considering the fact that it's differently laid out every time you enter it. There are many rooms that will become familiar after a while but the layouts rarely get tiresome as you never know what to expect next which makes each playthrough fresh.

With all of that in mind, some of the randomness in Rogue Legacy 2 feels slightly unfair. Even though you make a good amount of decisions, there will still be times when you don't have many promising choices. There are also moments when you play that can feel unfair such as how certain enemies are hard to spot like those dastardly evil paintings that blend into the background a bit too much.

That's good to know, thanks

Quests

One aspect of Rogue Legacy 2 that I absolutely loved is the fact that it has a list of quests for you to check off as you play and discover new areas and points of interest. Some of them can be cryptic such as uncovering a hole in a wall which leads to an item that weakens a particular boss and one will even have you kick-attack across the water in order to reach another valuable item. Speaking of which, the platforming is superb as you jump, double-jump, air-dash, and kick stuff for an extra boost. Of course, you'll have to earn these abilities and once you do, the platforming really opens up. I'm kind of getting off-topic but yes, the quests are great fun to master. 😅

Upgrades

Now that I mention upgrades, Rogue Legacy 2 features a massive assortment of unlockables that will keep you glued as you gradually become more powerful and grow your arsenal. Just like in the original game, expanding your castle is the primary method to unlock further boosts and features but on top of that, you can purchase equipment with earned currencies. I particularly enjoyed the blacksmith as you can unlock weapon and armour upgrades and when you match a set, you'll get a bonus which makes mixing and matching gear a rewarding experiment. You can also buy runes from the enchantress, shortcuts from a pizza girl, and extra special expanded capabilities from the soul shop. Gradually growing the assortment of tricks up your sleeve makes the gameplay incrementally more rewarding.

Classes

Another element of Rogue Legacy 2 that blew me away is its amount of character classes. You'll unlock more as you play and upgrade your castle and experimenting with what each one is capable of is a great deal of fun. I particularly enjoyed the berserker class as they can spin-attack while in mid-air which is awesome as it makes it feel like you're playing as Zero in Mega Man X4. There are long-range characters, too, such as magic users and archers so you can play however you wish; that is, if a class that you prefer actually comes up.

These boney bros are going down!

Rogue Legacy 2 is simply one of the best indie games ever. It manages to stay true to the original while forging its own identity in ways that make it stand out as unique and ultimately superior. You'd be a complete goof if you don't enjoy every second of it.

  • + Superbly-crafted roguelike structure with incredible Metroidvania setup
  • + Enjoyable assortment of unlockables
  • + Loads of variety and randomness
  • - Some randomness can feel unfair
  • - Certain enemies are difficult to spot
