Some games are super-challenging yet have an adorable presentation and with that in mind, allow me to present Super Sami Roll.
When I first started playing Super Sami Roll, I was surprised that I actually had to re-play some of the early levels because you'd figure with a game this cute, it would be easy. However, that is not the case because Super Sami Roll is full of rewarding challenges and clever stages that'll thoroughly put your platforming skills to the test and in my opinion, that's a wonderful thing. v1d30chumz 3-235-176-80
Anyway, you play as the titular Sami who's on a mission to save his friend Vera from the dastardly Albert VII so it's up to you to traverse many tricky levels in order to rescue her. Thankfully, these stages are filled with lovely sights and charming audio, especially when you hear adorable little grunts as Sami jumps around. Heck, even the enemies are cute and it all comes together to make one charming game.
You play Super Sami Roll by rolling around levels while jumping between platforms and you have a tongue ability that lets you grapple to walls, too. You can also climb up platform ledges and wall-jump which is nice because if you miss a jump, it may not result in you falling to your demise. A couple more innovative aspects which help is that you get an intuitive aimer for where your tongue will go and enemies don't always hurt you because they make Sami jump up in pain with the only risk being that you might fall off the edge of the stage.
On top of all that, there's an impressive amount of content in Super Sami Roll. Every stage grants you a grade according to how quickly you finish it and there are hidden collectibles, too; some of which are incredibly difficult to collect either because they are very well hidden or require the utmost precision to reach. There's a shop as well that you can purchase colours and accessories in. You'll also unlock a bonus multiplayer mini-game called Super Marble which is way more fun than it has any right being. That's a lot of stuff! 😊
Although Super Sami Roll is a delightful game, it can be a very frustrating experience. First, certain controls completely stumped me initially as they require multiple attempts to get right. For example, you sometimes have to attach your tongue to a platform then jump as you're pulled towards it with perfect timing so you can avoid getting snagged on spikes that surround a gap. There are unpredictable moments, too, such as new hazards or gimmicks that have unexpected behaviour. Whereas contemporary platformers push you along, you need to control every slight movement in Super Sami Roll or else you'll be toast. I appreciated this old-school approach to challenge but obviously, not everyone will enjoy it as much as I did. In fact, I can see this being quite a dishearteningly frustrating game for some. 😅
Super Sami Roll is a cute and fiendishly difficult platformer that genre fans who love a challenge will relish. On the other hand, if you're looking for a more casual and laidback collect-a-thon then you'll likely end up feeling too defeated to continue playing it.
