Earlier this year, a fantastic and highly underrated Vita ARPG from Nihon Falcom released. Less than six months later, we can now enjoy an upgraded version of it on PlayStation 4 so grab your Soul Device and let's head back to the Eclipse.

The White Shroud brings his awesome power to the Eclipse

Tokyo Xanadu tells the story of an alternate reality Tokyo where portals open to a sinister dimension known as the Eclipse. The plot follows high school student Kou and his chums as they investigate the rifts in the hopes of discovering their secrets in order to eventually save the city. Considering I already reviewed the original Vita version earlier this year, I highly recommend reading my full Tokyo Xanadu review first as you'll understand more about what an incredible game it is. Basically, it combines the action RPG gameplay of Ys with the visual style and even some characters from Trails of Cold Steel. All three games are developed by Nihon Falcom so it only makes sense that they would combine the best of both worlds to create this gem of a game. Now that you know generally what to expect, let's take a look at what's new in this upgraded iteration.

Upon starting Tokyo Xanadu eX+, I was immediately impressed by how much better its visuals are. The animation is super-smooth and the graphics are crystal clear and sharp which makes traversing the city and dungeons even more enjoyable than doing so on the Vita. Of course, the same incredible soundtrack is included and it all comes together to make a fantastic looking and sounding game.

Trails of Cold Steel is great, Kou, but stay focused!

When it comes to content, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ contains a surprising amount of extras that make it superior to its original release. For starters, there are new scenarios that shed more light on the cast of characters. After you beat the game, you can even play through a brand new quest, too. One of the best aspects of Tokyo Xanadu is the innovative and challenging boss fights so the fact that you can now challenge them via Time Attack and Boss Rush modes is a fantastic inclusion. On top of all this, you'll encounter new monsters, bosses, and dungeons which will provide more challenges for those who already mastered the original Vita game.

My favourite addition in Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is the new playable character; The White Shroud. Every once in a while throughout the story, you'll get to play as this mysterious character and doing so is a refreshing change of pace. He's an extremely capable knight and mastering his move set while decimating hordes of enemies and toppling massive bosses just feels incredible. He should have his own spin-off.

Even though Tokyo Xanadu eX+ improves on the original Tokyo Xanadu a great deal, the issues present in the original game are still problematic here. First of all, the new scenarios are fun to experience but they don't really do much to flesh out the generic story. Also, character customization remains virtually unchanged which is disappointing considering how basic it is. Last but not least, the overworld is just as small and repetitive as it was in the vanilla version. I wish they expanded it to make exploration more rewarding.

E. Greeds are no match for Asuka's skills

Whether you played the original Vita game or not, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is such a phenomenal action RPG dungeon crawler that every fan of the genre needs to check out with its satisfying fast-paced team-based combat, great soundtrack, and charming world.

  • + New scenarios, modes, enemies, and dungeons are great additions
  • + Looks a lot better on PlayStation 4
  • + The White Shroud is just awesome
  • - Story, party customization, and game world still lack variety and depth
