A few months ago, we were treated to a nifty card-based RPG and the formula's back already with Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden.

First off, if you've played Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars then you'll know exactly what to expect from Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden as it doesn't stray much from the distinct formula that it introduced. In fact, I actually appreciate that because it allows folks who enjoyed the first game to easily dive straight into this with absolutely no friction of learning the ins and outs. Heck, even the card mini-game remains virtually unchanged. Of course, this also makes me wish that it went much further to forge its own identity because it doesn't deviate much at all from the first game. v1d30chumz 18-208-187-128
With that being said, Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden certainly feels like a new experience when it comes to its story and cast of characters. The premise is that you sail from island to island on a mission to meet each maiden of the land as the balance of the world is threatened. You team up with a lady fittingly named Laty who's an aspiring maiden yet she didn't quite make the cut. The story that unfolds is one that ranges from touching moments to goofy comedic relief while the primary draw is each maiden's personalities coming to life in unique ways that'll keep you invested as to who you'll meet next and how their inner-selves will be manifested.
The gameplay element that ties in with this story is the fact that you'll be sailing between missions which makes the overworld feel more open although it's still a somewhat linear affair. This added feeling of freedom is exemplified whenever you can simply scan the world map with the right stick and instantly warp to whichever port you want. Meanwhile, the campaign involves traversing the world map, towns, and dungeons while making decisions and fighting enemies as well as managing your gear and equipping your favourite skills.
This aspect of Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden is almost identical to the first game and I found battling enemies to be quite satisfying for the most part, especially when you can take advantage of monsters' weaknesses and inflict status ailments that give you the upper-hand. With that being said, there are a lot of random encounters and I frankly started to get bored with them after a while. One part in particular has you running around while trying to gradually solve a dungeon-wide puzzle and I just wanted to focus on the puzzle yet I kept being interrupted with monsters. It made me feel as if I were playing a retro RPG but not in a good way; if that makes sense. 😅
Besides the enjoyable story and familiar yet still unique gameplay, Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden doesn't really have much else going for it. There are some side-quests that you can complete for various townsfolk and equipping better gear makes for a decent reward whenever you manage to save up enough or find some after a random event. There isn't all that much else to it; I mean, you could experiment with different skills and equip some that go together such as weakening enemies to a certain element then unleashing that element to devastating effects. Oh, and team attacks are fairly fun to initiate whenever you have enough gems in stock. 💎
I found Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden's story to be stronger than the first's yet when it comes to gameplay; it doesn't do much to make it feel fresh. It has me wondering how many of these titles there will be and how well future installments will hold up.
