Video Chums has been online for 6 years today and every year, I shine the spotlight on 10 underrated games so here's this year's list.
If you love retro-inspired RPGs as much as I do then you're probably familiar with KEMCO's lineup of fantastic old-school adventures. Miden Tower is perhaps my favourite offering from them as it features stellar combat, tons of interesting mechanics, rewarding character growth, and a great cast of characters with plenty of humour and drama throughout. What's not to love?Miden Tower Review

Brigandine The Legend of Runersia
As a sequel to a buried treasure for PS1, Brigandine The Legend of Runersia provides an in-depth and challenging SRPG formula that may require a lot of patience to master yet it's exceptionally satisfying stuff as you watch your nation's borders gradually expand across the continent. It's definitely not for everyone but if you want to sink your teeth into an immersive strategic game, you'll love it.Brigandine The Legend of Runersia Review
Holy Potatoes! What the Hell?!
If you've been here before then you may know that I'm a huge fan of the Holy Potatoes! series and it definitely doesn't get as much love as it deserves. Holy Potatoes! What the Hell?! is the craziest game in the franchise so far and I don't think any game has ever made me laugh out loud as much as it has. Oh, and the frantic management gameplay is a blast, too, of course!Holy Potatoes! What the Hell?! Review
Rigid Force Redux
I've been a shoot 'em up fan for decades ever since I played Capcom's classic shmup 1942. One of my favourite eras for the genre is the mid to late '90s and Rigid Force Redux captures that period perfectly with its spot-on 3D visuals, tight gameplay, and epic soundtrack.Rigid Force Redux Review
The Legend of Dark Witch 2019
Although The Legend of Dark Witch was featured in my first annual underrated games list, it's back 5 years later with an impressive remake. If you love old-school games then you'll fall in love with its blend of Mega Man and Gradius gameplay elements and the cast of characters is just awesome. When it comes to retro 2D action games, you definitely can't do much better than this. The Legend of Dark Witch 2019 Review
Wattam is a silly game. In fact, it's so silly that once you start playing it, you'll wonder just what the heck is going on. Then, you'll find the hours ticking away as you laugh and scratch your head at all of the strange and heartfelt situations that you'll witness and take part in. I still can't believe that this gem didn't reach a wider audience as it's one of the most unique and ridiculous games out there.Wattam Review
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX

Inti Creates are geniuses at creating genuine old-school games without feeling like they're trying to be old-school and Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX is a wonderful example of what they're capable of.Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX Review
Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!!
There aren't as many rhythm games as there were back at the turn of the millennium so when an awesome one comes out, it's a big deal. Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!! is the most original, intuitive, and downright enjoyable musical experience that I've had the pleasure of playing in decades. Plus, the amount of songs to master is absolutely staggering. It's a must-play for any genre fan.Groove Coaster: Wai Wai Party!!!! Review
Nearly everyone who has played Valfaris absolutely loves it and it deserves to be in any retro gamer's library. The combination of exciting 2D action, challenging run and gun gameplay, phenomenally stylish visuals, kickass music, and its consistent futuristic heavy metal vibe make it a stand-out masterpiece in the indie gaming scene. If that sounds like your kind of game then you have to give it a try.Valfaris Review
