Video Chums is 7 years old today and to celebrate, here are my 10 favourite underrated games from the past year out of the 206 titles that I wrote full reviews for. I hope you discover something that you'll enjoy as much as I did!

KASIORI

KASIORI is a puzzle game that's similar to Puyo Puyo although it's much more challenging. As a fan of these kinds of puzzlers, it blew me away and its adorable cast of characters make it quite an appealing package. Oh, and it's translated so poorly that it's hilarious! 😆

I don't have to pretended happy when I play KASIORI

Terra Trilogy

I love retro-inspired games and Terra Trilogy offers 3 challenging titles that'll have you carefully landing space ships, rescuing folks from hazardous locations, and blowing stuff up just like in Konami's arcade classic Scramble. If you enjoy similar games, I highly recommend it.

It looks basic but this trilogy is a blast

Dreamscaper

Dreamscaper recently released and it's one of the best roguelikes that I've ever played. The premise of dreaming the dungeons while daydreaming upgrades is beautifully realised and the gameplay itself will have you retrying over and over again as you power-up.

Roguelikes don't get much better than Dreamscaper

Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S

Picross games are quite common recently yet none had me hooked as much as Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S did. Its core gameplay is familiar yet the awesome soundtrack, delightful visuals, and rewarding unlockables make it a must-play for any nonogram enthusiast.

There's nothing quite like chilling in Ms. Miku's room between puzzles

Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World

I'm a huge fan of Wonder Boy and Monster World IV is a wonderful classic. Although divisive, I absolutely loved the adorable 3D graphics of Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World and its campaign is full of memorable moments and elaborate dungeons. I love it!

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions

Who needs the latest microtransaction-fueled FIFA rubbish when you can play an anime soccer game that's even more fun? With its dramatic cinematography and tight gameplay, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions offers top-notch arcade-style sports goodness.

These shootouts sure are tricky!

Natsuki Chronicles

If you've visited Video Chums before then you'll know what a huge fan of shoot 'em ups I am and Natsuki Chronicles is one of the best. With eye-popping visuals and plenty of awesome weapons to unlock and blast enemies away with, you're bound for a good time.

Kaze and the Wild Masks

With so many indie 2D platformers out there, it's easy to overlook ones that are actually worthwhile so if you still haven't played Kaze and the Wild Masks, you're in for a treat! Its challenging gameplay and oodles of replay value will keep you coming back for more.

Touhou Luna Nights

After winning our Indie Game of the Month award for September 2020, Touhou Luna Nights took home our Indie Game of the Year award for 2020 so you know it's a phenomenal game. Its time-based puzzles, brutally challenging bosses, and enjoyable array of abilities come together to make for one outstanding Metroidvania experience. Oh, and it features beautiful 2D visuals and awesome music!

Sakuya Izayoi sure looks cool...

Saviors of Sapphire Wings / Stranger of Sword City Revisited

Stranger of Sword City topped my 2nd annual Top 10 Underrated Games I've Reviewed list and it's back again but this time, it brought along a friend. Growing up being obsessed with grid-based first-person dungeons crawlers, Stranger of Sword City really took me back to the days when the genre was challenging and this remastered version makes it better than ever. Plus, Saviors of Sapphire Wings is a story-oriented dungeon crawler that'll appeal more to casual genre enthusiasts. In other words, it's one awesome collection! 😄
