Top 10 Underrated Games I've Reviewed (Year 8)

Great games that flew under the radar

Every year, I shine the spotlight on games I reviewed that didn't get as much attention as they deserved and after looking back at the 199 full game reviews that I wrote in our 8th year, here are this year's 10 most underrated games. Maybe you'll see something you like.

│ One of Video Chums' core principles is "it's better to be late and thorough than it is to be early and misinformed". 🧐

ConnecTank

ConnecTank is a genre-blender that combines puzzles, real-time strategy, beat 'em up combat, and the kitchen sink. On top of that, it's more fun to play cooperatively with friends so if you're looking for a frantic couch co-op game, you can't do much better than this. 😄 v1d30chumz 3-235-173-74

It'll make sense once you play it; trust me!

Train Valley

As a train enthusiast, I always love building tracks while watching trains do their thing. However, I wasn't expecting Train Valley to have a super-challenging arcade-like twist so imagine my delight when I found out just how rewarding and tough this indie gem is. 🚂

Who knew that planning train tracks could be so challenging?

Rubber Bandits

Single-screen arena games aren't anything new but what if one tasked you with committing crimes to claim loot before escaping to the next round? Well, that's certainly unique and Rubber Bandits is definitely a ton of fun to boot whether you play locally or online. 💰

Marsupilami: Hoobadventure

2D platformers are some of my favourite games and Marsupilami: Hoobadventure does an exceptional job of offering tight gameplay, beautiful visuals, and oodles of replay value. It's simply one of those games that's way better than it has any right being. 😊

How many 2D platformers look this incredible?

Princess Farmer

Another genre that I can't get enough of is puzzlers. As one, Princess Farmer excels with its staggering amount of variety and charming visual style that really shines in the story mode. With a hilarious sense of humour, what's not to love about this delightful game? 🐰

This is one puzzler that's as fun as it is cute

The Riftbreaker

When I think of brutally challenging games, The Riftbreaker always comes to mind as it offers high-octane real-time strategy at its prime. If you don't properly erect defenses, your base may be completely wiped out as aliens will relentlessly destroy anything they come across. Plus, the twin-stick shooting is super-satisfying. Do you have what it takes to harvest resources on hostile alien planets? I do. 😉

Monomals

Games don't get much more unique than Monomals. Playing as an underwater headphone cable in order to fish for the titular Monomals is a strange premise but thankfully, the gameplay is varied and a great deal of fun. Oh, and you can make your own beats, too! 🎧

KeyWe

As another game built for co-op play, KeyWe goes above and beyond to create a ridiculous multiplayer formula. Sorting mail and decoding telegrams in a post office run by animals is silly indeed yet the tasks are a blast to accomplish and there's a load of variety packed in. 📦

Aeon Drive

There aren't many games built for speedrunning but Aeon Drive is perhaps the best one that I've ever played. Combining 2D platforming with nifty mechanics such as a dagger that you can throw then warp to makes it feel like a puzzle game at times yet one that will keep you on the edge of your seat, especially with the 30 second time limit that's constantly counting down. ⏱️

Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi

If you've been to Video Chums before then you may know that grid-based dungeon crawlers are a personal favourite of mine. With that in mind, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi completely knocked my socks off when I played it last year with its brutal monster-filled world and rewarding campaign structure. If you think you have what it takes to lead an expedition into the unknown, definitely give it a go. 🏆
